Terrorism

Terrorism vs. Civil Liberties
We must pursue terrorists with extreme vigor, but not at the expense of our civil liberties. If we give up our freedom, the terrorists win.

Torture
Torture is not an effective interrogation technique, and its use just reinforces a negative image of Americans overseas. If we torture, we're no better than the terrorists. This practice must stop immediately.

Terrorism Prevention
We will never stop terrorism while we refuse to understand the reasons for terrorism. A thorough re-examination of our foreign policy is essential.

War on Terror
The so-called "War on Terror" has itself been disastrous for American freedom. Rather than a "war," we need to issue letters of mark and reprisal against al Qaeda.
(What does that mean?)

Authorization for the Use of Force
President Bush has repeatedly shown that he wants to take an extremely broad interpretation of the authorization for the use of force granted after 9/11. It's time for this broad and vague authorization to be revoked and, if necessary, replaced with something more strictly defined.

Nationwide Terrorism Preparedness
Rather than wasting money on bureaucracy and silly color codes, we should be spending our money strategically where it is most needed: in preventing attacks in high-risk areas.

Local Terrorism Preparedness
The biggest obstacle to our terrorism preparedness is all the unfunded government mandates we've been given. Local authorities know better where our strengths and weaknesses are, and they need to be empowered to respond appropriately.

Habeas Corpus
The right to challenge your detention in a court of law is unequivocally granted in the Constitution. Recent legislation passed by Congress denying habeas corpus rights to so-called "enemy combatants" is unconstitutional.
